The biggest name in the literary world of crime and justice is Sherlock Holmes. Through his careful observation and logical reasoning, he is able to solve the most complex mysteries. Indeed, Sherlock Holmes is better known even than his own creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930).

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

老人与海英语读后感

Despite I’ve not in my childhood yet, I still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. The tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. This summer I’ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940. It’s the world-famous fairy-tale by the French author, Antoine de St-Exupery, The Little Prince.

On his all-alone journey, the little prince meets different kinds of people, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. From these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd. Following the instruction of the geographer, he descends in the Sahara, on the earth.

A typical Holmes adventure begins with the gentleman detective sitting in his living room in 221B Baker Street, London, as clients and Scotland Yard knock on the door to ask for help. More often than not, upon asking a few questions to the point, Holmes would have half-solved the mystery without even leaving his armchair. Later, he would arrive at the scene of crime accompanied by Dr. John Watson, the clumsy, good-natured physician who shares his apartment. Watson, much interested in detective work, would imitate Holmes as the latter walks about, looks for clues through a magnifying glass and asks seemingly offhand questions. The doctor would then beat his brains trying to solve the crime, but become even more confused by the clues. Suddenly, Holmes would sit back and coolly identify the criminal. "How did you do it?" asks the doctor, quite puzzled. "Elementary, dear Watson, elementary,"says Holmes as he goes on to explain how he solved the case. Once again justice is served, and peace and quiet return to the comfortable little apartment of the master detective and his faithful friend.

Unbelievable, this little book moved me a lot. I seldom think about the true meaning of love and life before. Well, now I can say, with my short sixteen-year’s life experience, it’s like the stars in the sky that lit my heart. The little prince is not only an ordinary fairy-tale for children, but also for grown-ups, and our teenagers. Nevertheless, when I read this book, I feel a little sad – about ourselves, whom are losing more and more innocence

Conan Doyle created Holmes in his 1887 novel, A Study in Scarlet. At the time, Conan Doyle was a physician in Portsmouth, England. With the success of his second Holmes story, The Sign of Four, he gave up his medical practice to become a full-time writer. In all, he wrote 4 novels and 56 short stories about this character, besides other works of fiction and history.

As many other fairy-tales, the outline of The Little Prince is not very complex. “I”, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the Sahara. In this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the Asteroid B612. The little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. In that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids.

In "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle"(1892), for example, Holmes is asked to find the owner of a hat, with no other information than what he can find on the hat itself. Watson studies the hat and returns it to his friend. "I can see nothing," he says. "No, Watson, you see everything. You fail, however, to reason from what you see." Having said so, Holmes identifies the owner's age, his personality, his intelligence, his habits, his financial situation, and the fact that his wife no longer loves him. Such performances made Holmes an instant hero in the hearts of many readers.

I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.
英文读后感:三篇

Ironically, Conan Doyle soon grew tired of the popularity of Sherlock Holmes. He felt that readers only recognized him as a writer of detective stories and ignored his more serious writing. The constant demand for more Holmes stories also interrupted his other work. Therefore, in 1893, Conan Doyle let Holmes fall to his death, along with the evil Professor James Moriarty, at a waterfall in Switzerland. The public's demand for the detective's return was so great, however, that the author brought him back to life in 1903. After that, the character became immortal both in Sir Arthur's later novels and indeed in the public's imagination. To this day, readers around the world are still fascinated by Holmes' adventures, and Conan Doyle's stories still serve as models for detective fiction.
